Joseph Smith’s Flawed “Non-eternal” God Concept

As Christians, we believe that God has always been God, and always will be God. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

Well, the Book of Mormon agrees! Moroni 8:18 says,

“For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.”

I can give that a good, hearty AMEN!

Interestingly enough, in June 1830, Joseph Smith claimed to have translated certain portions of the Bible. In the Pearl of Great Price, one of the 4 books Mormons consider scripture, there is a book called the Book of Moses.

Moses 1:3 says, “And God spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I am the Lord God Almighty, and Endless is my name; for I am without beginning of days or end of years; and is not this endless?”

Again, I completely agree with that!

Only 3 months before he died, Joseph Smith gave the King Follett Discourse, a blasphemous funeral sermon that blew the Christian doctrine of God out of the water. Here is a taste of what Joseph Smith said in his sermon:

I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see

He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did

God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!

…And you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you!

Even though the Book of Mormon is not a historical document that portrays the account of the lost tribes of Israel in America, that book does teach that God has always been God! The Book of Mormon does not contain Mormon doctrine about the eternality of God. Joseph Smith’s anthropomorphic theology about God did not come about until shortly before his death. Sadly, Joseph Smith’s views contradicted his own teachings in the Book of Mormon and the Book of Moses.

God was never a man who became a god.

However, God, being God from all eternity past, became a man when Jesus Christ took a body of flesh and bones and suffered for our sins here on earth by dying for us! It is funny how Joseph Smith says that we have got to learn how to become gods ourselves, when in Isaiah 43:10, God says that before Him there was no God formed, neither shall there be any god formed after him!

I trust in God’s testimony of Himself in the book of Isaiah, rather than a 19th century false prophet who said that God had to become God.

God truly is endless from all eternity to all eternity!
