Problems With The Book of Ether: Chapter 1

There are 15 books that make up the Book of Mormon. The Book of Ether is the second to the last book in the Book of Mormon. The “Brief Explanation about the Book of Mormon” describes the record of the “Plates of Ether, which present a history of the Jaredites. This record was abridged by Moroni, who inserted comments of his own and incorporated the record with the general history under the title ‘Book of Ether.'” The record of the Jaredites are supposedly taken from 24 plates found by the people of Limhi during the days of King Mosiah.

This Jaredite colony, according to the official LDS manual, Book of Mormon: Student Manual Religion 121 & 122, “came to the promised land [America] after the Flood, somewhere around 2200-2100 B.C, and existed for at least some time after the Lehi colony arrived, 600 B.C. and later. Thus they probably lived here at least fifteen hundred years.” (“Ether 1-5,” p. 136)

According to the introduction to chapter 1 of Ether, it says, “The language of the Jaredites is not confounded at the Tower of Babel.” Jared asked his brother to pray to God so that their language would not be confounded. (1:34) Ether 1:35 says, “…the Lord had compassion upon Jared; therefore he did not confound the language of Jared; and Jared and his brother were not confounded.”

Genesis 11:9 clearly says that God DID confound ALL languages at the Tower of Babel. Ether chapter 1 is in conflict with this verse in Genesis which says, “…because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth…” Notice how it says “all.” This includes Jared and his family.

Ether 1:1 says, “…I, Moroni, proceed to give an account of those ancient inhabitants who were destroyed by the hand of the Lord upon the face of this north country.” Since when did the God of the Bible have his followers give an account of a people group who destroyed? This is foreign to the Biblical account. There are no accounts for the people of Sodom, Gomorrah, or even the people of Jericho.

Ether 1:4 tells about plates that have an account of events that happened from the time of Adam down until the Tower of Babel, and that “whoso findeth them, the same will have power that he may get the full account.” Really? Who has ever found these plates and given an account of these things? No one, because they are not real plates.

In Ether 1:38, the land of America was supposedly given to the Jaredites that they “may receive it for [their] inheritance.”  Finally, Ether 1:43 says that the Jaredites will be the greatest nation that will ever be on the face of the whole earth.

This is a false prophecy. The Jaredites were completely destroyed (Ether 15).

Since the Jaredites supposedly came to America to be the greatest nation on earth for 1,500 years, why are there absolutely no remains of any of their cities here? Because they were never here; it’s as simple as that.
